Why is the US government placing a prohibition on internet gambling?

In my opinion there are two main reasons

1. The US will lose control of this lucrative business if it is online, most online gambling sites are based in tax free off shore havens, like Malta for example

2. US politicians see this as bad for the US economy

As an example of the amount of money online gambling generates, and hence the US could lose to its established casino’s and related business’s

Take the grand national horse race last Saturday in the UK
